( ferdinand could not be more right with his assumption because tea was often the only thing she could indulge in. her father had been a weak and fragile man, something passed down to her in addition to the sohma curse.
when he finally showed up, knocking at her door, she opened it and looked up at him. once malevolent, brusque and intimidating, akito stood before him with a soft and sullen expression. she wasn't trying to tug at his strings or receive empathy from him if he truly disliked her-
but even she couldn't deny she was lonely anymore. beneath the anger and surly behavior, she was a fragile child after all. )
Thank you for coming, please step in.
( she stepped aside, and once he stepped in he would see how cold and impersonal her apartment was. all that was there that seemed to say it belonged to her was a collection of zodiac figurines, a fancy box, and a pile of books scattered about. )
( it was already bad enough to see the state that akito was in on a screen, but it's worse when he's before him. the sadness for his sake sinks deeper into his chest, and his concern and sympathy tug on his features. he comes in as invited, the atmosphere of the apartment only enhancing the sense that he was too often bereft of companionship and the warmth that came from it. he was new, after all, and it would not surprise ferdinand that he would be slow to form the bonds necessary to forge such companionship. the fact of the matter is, akito might have reached some kind of breaking point, and if he truly had no one else to rely on, then... who else would he call upon in this seemingly dark time?
poor akito...
at the offer, he manages to smile, shaking his head. )
That will not be necessary. Actually, I brought with me some tea that we could share, and though I am your guest, I would be happy to brew it for you. I do not know about you, but no matter what I am going through, a warm and refreshing cup of tea makes me feel a little better. Would you prefer something black, herbal, or green?
( once he stepped inside, akito closed the door behind them and remained facing it for a moment. a million thoughts raced through her mind, but for once the lack of hatred, negativity was gone from her. she had to behave partially because of her punishment, but also-
she didn’t want to ruin whatever positive relationship she had with him. so she turned to face him, offering a softer smile. )
Herbal would be lovely. I actually have everything needed to brew tea towards the small kitchen area.
( she began to walk further into the room, until she reached him and she looked up at him with. there were no mind games, manipulation, or anything he had seen before. he was seeing the real akito; a lost child who had been propped up as a god all of her life. )
( but before that, ferdinand softens as akito approaches with a bearing unlike what he has grown used to from him, and those signs of what looked like a physical altercation looking even worse than before. something about it makes him long to comfort him somehow, or perhaps bring him even closer, but both seem inappropriate when done too egregiously. thanking him for the simple act of coming when called to, however, touches his smile up into something warmer. )
I am pleased to come, especially when it means much to you. ( his smile falls a little, and he raises his hand as if to touch him but thinks better of it and returns it to his side. ) Your face... What happened?
( normally, akito would flinch from a stranger potentially touching her, but through a combination of desiring affection and the sweater on her, she seemed almost sad when his hand withdrew from her.
she didn’t want to tell him what the reality of the situation was-
if he knew what she had done to warrant this kind of assault, he would surely become someone else to hate and despise her. for some reason, the thought bothered her. she wanted warmth and love like anyone else, and while she had it from the zodiac, here she had nothing. nobody.
so she stepped in closer, placing her face gently against his chest if he allowed it and spoke. she was going to lie, and hope he didn’t pry for more information. )
I’ve always been a careless child, my sickness makes me dizzy sometimes. My father was far more sickly than I am though…
I should really be more careful, falling down the stairs is unbecoming of me really.
( ferdinand did not budge as akito lightly buried his face in his chest, which was tugged on hard in the empathy that was stimulated by both the act and the elaboration of his straits. it also seemed to communicate that touching him in return would not bother him, and so ferdinand placed his palm to his back carefully in a show of the support he had wanted to give, his head bowing down toward akito's as they engaged in a sort of affection that was new for them. his heart slowly began to pick up in pace.
it was becoming more apparent that akito was quite a sensitive young man underneath the coldness he had been treated to before, both in heart and in body. )
I am sorry to hear that. For the sake of your well-being, I agree that you cannot afford to be too careless. I do not want you to hurt yourself even more. ( the hand at his back started gently stroking him. ) When you first called me, you seemed so rattled. On my way here, I feared that someone had attacked you, and that you were reluctant to come out or too unnerved to be alone. But it would appear that your adversity was the stairs all along!
( there was definitely more to it than just the stairs, he thought. akito must have been struggling with other problems. )
( this warmth and gentleness wasn’t something she thought she could ever have outside of the confines of her spiritual prison, from those that called her god. the sohma estate and clans under it were so tightly woven and within their own world, they often married between each other. despite sharing a name- they weren’t related.
in fact those on the ‘outside’ barely even knew of akito as more than just the head of the family. cruel, powerful, and handsome is how she was portrayed.
so to be here, being touched gently by someone she could barely call an acquaintance was so new to her. there had been instances with someone like tohru who tried reaching out to her, but this…
she couldn’t help but wrap her arms around him, pulling him into a closer embrace. she closed her eyes and hid herself, simply taking in his words without much protest or complaint. her response to him was shaky, clearly tears were forming at her eyes and her voice had become strained. )
R-Right, I’ll be more careful. I’m sorry for bothering you with this, I’ll make it up to you.
( his heart squeezed painfully for him yet again, and he brought his other arm around him to return the embrace it seemed like he really needed. voice softening, he pressed his cheek against the top of his head, his long hair spilling over one side. )
You are no bother to me at all. In fact, it gladdens me that you felt that you could call on me at a time like this. I had started to think that you did not care to be in my company.
( she had no words to say to him about that, because truthfully even her own emotions and desires confused her. she wasn’t sure if she should be doing this, if she should be like this with him.
yet it felt right, almost as if she had been missing something. but she knew these things couldn’t last long, they couldn’t just stand here in an embrace forever. so she took a deep breath and enjoyed how soft he was, how his long hair draped over the side of her as if to shield her.
finally, she broke from the embrace to look up at him, eyes soft and moist from before. )
I don’t know a thing about you….and yet you came here. The least I can do is show you my appreciation.
Will…will you tell me more about yourself while you make tea? How long have you been here?
( as he feels akito detach from against him, he straightens, too, his hands migrating from back to shoulders. he smiles at the opportunity presented to him. )
Of course! I would relish the chance for us to get to know each other better. ( he releases his companion and makes his way over to the kitchen to get the water boiling, in no rush. ) I have been here for... well, about half a year, now. Like many others forced into our situation, life here is drastically different than it was where I am from. Fódlan is the name of it. The technology here is far more advanced, for one, such as cars instead of horses, or electricity instead of fire. For me personally, it was quite something else to be treated like a Submissive of Duplicity when I was once a man of status.
( as soon as he stepped away from her, akito moved towards the center of her apartment, sitting on the floor before a small coffee table. she place her elbows on the edge, the base of her chin resting on her palms. she watched him carefully, taking in his words and wondering just how things ended up like this.
she knew him in such an intimate manner, and yet knew so little of him. no one she had run into seemed to mention him, whereas they had mentioned others in passing. then he said something that resonated with her, or at the very least peaked her interest. )
A man of status? What were you exactly?
( the way he spoke and presented himself, it almost seemed as if he were of nobility.... )
( ferdinand would have loved to know that he struck akito as such. )
I was a duke. ( he found a teapot and suitable cups as he waited for the water to be heated. ) Duke Aegir, to be precise. Aegir is a territory on the eastern coast of the Adrestian Empire, which has now expanded to encompass all of Fódlan. A war had just been waged to its conclusion, you see, and so the Adrestian Empire as it is now is not the same as the one I was born into. It is a long story, but one I would be happy to tell.
( his words were strange and rather confusing to her, but she remained silent and listened without much comment. she tried her best to make sense of it all, but really it sounded like something out of a book.
that wasn’t to say she didn’t believe him- she had heard about others and their worlds, just as equally bizarre and strange. additionally, her own life truly did sound like something out of a fantasy as well. members of her family, born with a curse that transforms them into their respective zodiac sign at the embrace of a member of the opposite gender. she was the only one who didn’t transform.
to his question, because of the sweater she had on and her own desire to keep him around, she nodded. )
I have as much time as you’ll give me to hear whatever it is, you wish to share with me.
brace yourself; ferdinand has commenced The Blabbening
( one thing that was setting his heart at ease is that it seemed as though akito was finding some emotional equilibrium again as they spoke. he knew that it didn't mean that akito didn't have reason to be stressed anymore, but it was still a relief. and though he was given the go-ahead to elaborate on the history of the empire and all of fódlan, he tried to keep in mind that just about every part of it was alien to his conversation partner. it would be easy to get overwhelmed by too much detail at once.)
Very well. Please do not hesitate to stop and ask me to pause or clarify at any time. ( he continues to busy himself with preparing their tea as he goes on. )
The Empire's history spans over a thousand years, and there have been many wars over the course of it that have changed its borders and developed new nations in Fódlan where the Empire once controlled. It is really quite fascinating, but for now, I will try to condense it into what was relevant to my lifetime. In my time, there existed the Adrestian Empire, the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, and the Leicester Alliance. Cradled in the middle of them was the neutral territory of the Church, where a lofty and magnificent monastery called Garreg Mach was located as its central base of operations. It held a great degree of power and influence over all three nations, and moreover, it was home to the Officers Academy, a prestigious school designed to prepare all of Fódlan's nobility for the future. ( here, his face gets a bit wistful. ) I bear many fond memories of that time. When the war started, it was only my first year of attending classes. To complicate matters further, it was my own classmate and house leader who declared war on the Church, which swiftly became a war against all the rest of Fódlan. And for five years, I fought in it.
( to say akito was expecting this would be a lie. however, it was surprisingly a good distraction to the immense pain and torture this place had put her through, and what she had put herself through. she was terrified of duplicity, of the food, the air, the water-
all of it reminded her of what happened the first time she met ferdinand and of the stories others here had shared with her. so this, even if he was going on about things that went over her head, was better than being alone. her hunger for comfort and solace was far too great, it drowned out her anger, domineering nature, and general malice.
as he spoke, she remained silent and wondered how he adapted so well here. if he was fresh from war, of nobility, and yet survived here as a submissive of all things, why couldn't she? the answer, which she already knew, terrified her. so she opted to push herself into this conversation and her attention on ferdinand instead. if she focused on him, she would do what her punishment entailed, and she would save herself of her fears for now. )
Your world....sounds rather so primitive...wars? I don't mean that in a bad way...I guess we just come from very different times.
( the word 'primitive' was quite pejorative, yet to a certain extent, ferdinand couldn't help but agree. he did mention one of the more salient aspects of how his world could be seen as backwards compared to duplicity in the realm of technology. nevertheless, his eyebrows rose in surprise at the response. )
Wars seem... primitive to you? ( he chuckled under his breath in awe at the idea. ) That does not sound like a bad thing at all. I would very much like for them to stay as annals of what once was, not what might be.
( as sheltered and controlling as she was, even someone like her could see the pointlessness of such endeavors. she was well educated and well read, and she knew of the chaos and destructiveness of wars. she hated the thought of anything happening to her beloved zodiac members, or the ones that remained, because of war.
still, she isn’t sure what else to say or ask, the whole thing was quite shocking to hear really. but…
she decided to try and keep things light for now, after all, if ferdinand became tense or suspicious of akito, her sweater would begin to close in on her. )
I suppose that’s one thing we can agree upon….
Is that when you were pulled from your world? In the middle of war? Or was it over by then?
It had concluded by the time I was taken here. We were victorious, but the real toil that comes with reconstructing what we had dismantled had been underway. It feels as though I have left much undone. ( the duke now disconnected sighed, pouring the water into the pot now that it was hot enough. ) I have been told that time flows differently here, so it consoles me some to think that I am not inadvertently being delinquent in my duties.
( it seemed like a good opportunity to pass the focus over to akito, considering he had just expounded on his own history a little. besides, he was curious about him perhaps as much. while he waited for the tea to brew, he brought over the cups and the like to the low table that akito was seated at. )
What of you? Were you taken away in the midst of something you were trying to do? Or is it another story?
( it was certainly interesting to see and hear this man who had been of nobility, had fought in a was was here of all places comforting akito and serving her tea. it was a strange concept that brought in even more strange feelings. if ferdinand really looked at her at all, she would seem almost pensive and deep in thought.
really it forced her to admit there was a vast world outside of the bubble she had been in for years and it made her wonder-
could she just be someone different here? but then if someone from her world did end up showing up...)
I'm afraid I'm not as interesting....so please...you can tell me more about yourself.
( she didn't want to upset him and risk telling him about who she really was. after all, the last thing she saw was her own mother trying to kill her, a decades long feud coming to a head. )
( ferdinand did notice the solemn preoccupation take hold of akito, and paired with how he deflected his attempt to learn more about him, it was quite concerning. there must be a reason that he was so guarded about himself, and that in and of itself piqued ferdinand's interest even more. he crouched at the table across from him and shook his head, trying a smile. )
Come, now. That is no way to think. It is all a matter of perspective, and you have not even given mine a chance. Besides, this is no contest to see who can be more interesting than the other. I simply wish to know more about someone I wish to befriend. Will you allow me?
( akito just wasn't sure what to share or say. despite the pain she had inflicted on her precious zodiac members, her own life was full of it too. she couldn't really think of anything she could share that wouldn't be viewed as too drastic or would bring the mood down. the source of it all, her mother was just too painful to think about.
so she decided to just gloss over things, keep it simple. even if she had been told things by others here like 'if you go home, you won't remember this place', what if she never went home? then someone here would know how horrible she was and her life. )
I come from a place called Japan, it's a country on Earth? I'm the head of my family, a large assembly of clans under the Sohma last name. My father died when I was young...he seemed to really....love that woman-
My mother...I guess you could say I was raised to be a proper head of my family. Not very interesting, I'm afraid.
( nothing about ferdinand's face seemed to betray a sense of disinterest, but it seemed to hurt to hear of akito's father's untimely end. )
Quite the opposite! I find that fascinating. Though, it is regrettable that you were made to assume such a responsibility at an early age. The way you speak of her, I am getting the impression that you were not terribly fond of your mother.
( she didn't want to discuss ren further than she had to, but ferdinand was asking her questions and she wasn't sure how to back out of this without resorting to angrily telling him to stop.
so it became clear how uncomfortable she was. she remained silent, eyes looking down at the empty tea cup as she began to fidget with the sweater she had on. perhaps if she changed things to prevent further questions-
she could always silence him with a kiss couldn't she? but for now she decided to divulge just a bit without saying the real reason for their dispute. )
She never wanted children, so my father and the house maids were the ones who raised me. We still lived together but due to how large the estate was...she lives in a completely different house on the same property.
( she paused for a moment before taking a deep breath. )
( a clever diversion! just before ferdinand was about to respond, akito turned his attention away from their uncomfortable topic. how long has it been? )
Hmm... ( however!! ) No, I recommend giving it a few more minutes. Now, where were we... Oh! I was raised by maids and servants, myself, being that my mother was the duchess and thus had important duties, but what time I did spend with my mother never made me feel like I was unwanted. I wonder, if it had been the other way around... how would that make me feel as a young child? ( he grows thoughtful for a moment but returns quickly to the topic with regards to akito. ) Is that why you harbor a certain disdain for her?
( it seemed like ferdinand was far too imposing for akito to handle properly, and while she knew she could technically ask him to leave to avoid this uncomfortable situation, she was in a predicament.
either she did that and her sweater would punish her immediately, or she had to figure out a way to both satisfy his curiosity and keep her secrets guarded. it was tricky regardless because as much as she hated her mother and didn't care about speaking poorly of her, she also wasn't necessarily looking for pity because she knew-
if she told ferdinand the real reason her mother despised her, he would know her secret. the one that still gave her any sense of control here.
so akito sighed a bit, her face clearly expressing just how uncomfortable she was. she wasn't sure what to say, so she stood up from where she was seated and moved closer to ferdinand. once she was next to him, she leaned in closer to him and spoke. )
How can you love someone who never gave you any affection or any kind words?
( if he pushed the topic, at least now she was close enough to silence him through other means. )

( she paused for a moment before taking a deep breath. )
The tea...it should be ready, right?

Hmm... ( however!! ) No, I recommend giving it a few more minutes. Now, where were we... Oh! I was raised by maids and servants, myself, being that my mother was the duchess and thus had important duties, but what time I did spend with my mother never made me feel like I was unwanted. I wonder, if it had been the other way around... how would that make me feel as a young child? ( he grows thoughtful for a moment but returns quickly to the topic with regards to akito. ) Is that why you harbor a certain disdain for her?

either she did that and her sweater would punish her immediately, or she had to figure out a way to both satisfy his curiosity and keep her secrets guarded. it was tricky regardless because as much as she hated her mother and didn't care about speaking poorly of her, she also wasn't necessarily looking for pity because she knew-
if she told ferdinand the real reason her mother despised her, he would know her secret. the one that still gave her any sense of control here.
so akito sighed a bit, her face clearly expressing just how uncomfortable she was. she wasn't sure what to say, so she stood up from where she was seated and moved closer to ferdinand. once she was next to him, she leaned in closer to him and spoke. )
How can you love someone who never gave you any affection or any kind words?
( if he pushed the topic, at least now she was close enough to silence him through other means. )
