But Bernie loves giving little things to her dearest friends - even if she can't admit that out loud to anyone ever - so of course she gets swept up into the practice, no matter how foreign it is to those of their world.
A package arrives by courier to the apartment that her friends all live in. The gift-wrapped box addressed to Ferdinand contains a set of cotton handkerchiefs all embroidered by hand. Or maybe he won't know it's embroidered by hand? Either way, each one is monogrammed with Fs and decorated with little spiraling ferns. She reflects that they may look kind of dainty and ladylike after she's made them, but... Well, hopefully he'll like them! It comes with a short note: ]

Initially he wondered if this was in response to him sending her something for her birthday, but he's relieved to find out that it's just out of the general spirit that seems to be present among many this time of year.

Now that we are partaking in the wintry gift-giving atmosphere, I must gift you something in return. Did you hear of Christmas from someone, or is it possibly another holiday where gifts are shared? I learned that Christmas is a cheerful romantic holiday, and that it is custom to eat a bucket of fried chicken with your family.
